Manchester City’s appeal against their Premier League financial breach verdict faces significant challenges, according to legal experts. The club was found guilty of inflating sponsorship deals by £830 million through alleged sham contracts between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, a ruling they argue contains material errors.
City maintains the disputed payments originated from the United Arab Emirates government as a shareholder of their sponsors, not the club’s owners, and points to inconsistencies in the Commission’s judgment. However, legal analyst James Severn warned that the appeal hinges on proving a clear error in law, fact, or procedure that fundamentally altered the outcome—a high bar given the Commission’s existing evidence, including bank statements and government records.
The club’s case is further complicated by Etihad Airways’ prior denial in 2015 court documents that the Abu Dhabi government funded its sponsorship, though City insists the full context was not considered. Meanwhile, Etihad has criticized the Premier League for not allowing it to participate in the proceedings, though legal experts say this alone may not suffice to overturn the decision.
