Demetrious Johnson Calls the UFC ‘Hypocrites’ Over Recent Cuts

October 15, 2026

UFC Hall of Famer Demetrious Johnson has sharply criticized the promotion for what he calls a double standard in its recent roster decisions. Over the past month, the UFC released Michael Page—who had compiled a 5-1 record in the Octagon—and Farid Basharat, a 7-0 fighter.

Johnson argued that these cuts reflect a bias against fighters who frequently win by decision, despite the UFC’s claims of showcasing the best talent. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Johnson accused the organization of hypocrisy, noting that fighters like himself remain on the roster as long as they win, regardless of how they secure victories.

He also questioned the UFC’s framing of itself as a true sports league, suggesting its decisions are driven more by entertainment value than athletic merit. Page, for instance, reportedly earns more at Misfits Boxing than he did in the UFC, raising further questions about the promotion’s priorities.

Johnson’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the UFC’s approach to fighter contracts and divisional dynamics. While UFC president Dana White has previously emphasized the importance of ‘the best of the best,’ Johnson pointed out that the promotion often cuts winners who don’t align with its preferred style of high-octane finishes.

The fighter urged transparency, calling for the UFC to either embrace its role as a sports league or openly acknowledge its focus on spectacle over competition.
