The Indianapolis Colts have bolstered their defensive line by signing veteran defensive end Carl Lawson to the practice squad. Lawson, who previously worked out for the team in September, brings experience and familiarity with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s system, having played under him in Cincinnati during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
His best season came in 2020, when he recorded 64 pressures and established himself as a disruptive rotational pass rusher. The Colts made room for Lawson by releasing tight end Kenny Fletcher Jr.
from the practice squad, a move necessitated by injuries to Arden Key and Micheal Clemons, who is already on injured reserve. Lawson’s addition comes as Indianapolis struggles at defensive end, currently ranked 31st in total defense and allowing 423.8 yards per game.
Though his role has diminished in recent years, the 31-year-old’s familiarity with Anarumo’s system could prove valuable if he is elevated to the active roster, particularly if Key remains sidelined for multiple games. Lawson’s eight-season NFL career includes 32 sacks, 122 quarterback hits, and 32 tackles for loss across stints with the Bengals, Jets, Cowboys, and Ravens, though his snap count has declined in recent campaigns.
