Coco Gauff withdraws from WTA event hours after losing to Elise Mertens in Beijing, ‘I’m disappointed’

Coco Gauff exited the China Open in the fourth round after a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Elise Mertens. The American player cited a lack of physical energy during the match and noted that she had been dealing with a difficult period following a wave of racist online harassment.

Following the loss, Gauff opted to withdraw from the upcoming Wuhan Masters tournament. This match marked the first time Mertens has defeated Gauff in their six professional encounters.
