The college football community is mourning the loss of Chuck Amato, who passed away at 80. A former linebacker and wrestler for North Carolina State, he returned to lead the program as head coach from 2000 to 2006, compiling a 49-37 record and securing four bowl victories.
His tenure was highlighted by a record-breaking 11-win season in 2002, which concluded with a triumph over Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl. Amato was recognized for his recruiting prowess and his role in developing standout players like quarterback Philip Rivers and running back TA McClendon.
Before his time as a head coach, he gained extensive experience as an assistant at Arizona State and Florida State, where he contributed to two national titles under Bobby Bowden. His career also included a stint as the Wolfpack's defensive coordinator during the 1970s.
