Celtic step up, Rangers slip up as Hibs' woes continue under Reedijk

October 19, 2026

Celtic dominated Hearts in a 7-1 thrashing at Tynecastle Stadium, extending their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to four points. The victory came after a strong second-half performance in their Europa League defeat to Benfica, with manager Ange Postecoglou fielding the same front three—Benjamin Nygren, Callum Osmand, and Camilo Duran—who all scored in the match.

Osmand, making his first start for Celtic, was particularly impactful with two goals. Meanwhile, Rangers missed a chance to reclaim the top spot after a 2-2 draw at Dundee, with a late defensive error by Dan Neil costing them the win.

The setback leaves Hibs under Marink Reedijk facing back-to-back defeats and now sitting at the bottom of the table, while Motherwell and St Mirren could also be in jeopardy after five consecutive losses.

Hearts’ poor defensive organization, particularly against set pieces, proved costly as Celtic scored twice from corners within the first three minutes. Despite Hearts’ strong recent form, losing just one of their last 14 games across all competitions, their lack of focus and respect for Celtic’s attack contributed to their humiliation.

The result underscores the growing gap between the top teams, with Celtic now four points clear at the summit and the same margin separating seventh and twelfth place in the league standings.
