BYU sophomore Kihei Akina has reached the midway point in his pursuit of a PGA Tour card following a ninth-place finish at the Bank of Utah Championship. This result, his first successful weekend appearance in three attempts at the event, adds two points to his PGA Tour University Accelerated total, bringing his current tally to 10.
Akina, the reigning Phil Mickelson Award winner, has climbed to 10th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking after a busy year that included appearances at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship and on the U.S. Walker Cup team.
His performance in Utah also secures him a spot in the upcoming Butterfield Bermuda Championship. He currently trails only Connor Graham and Tyler Watts in the race for Accelerated points, aiming to join the three players who have already secured their cards through this pathway.
