The Milwaukee Bucks made a roster move Friday, waiving guard Kevin Porter Jr. just before the 4:00 p.m.
deadline to finalize their 15-player regular-season roster. Porter Jr., 26, had a limited but impactful season in 2025-26, starting all 36 games he played while averaging 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game.
His tenure with the Bucks marks the latest chapter in a career marked by highs and lows, including a trade from Detroit to Houston in 2020, a high-profile arrest in 2023, and a subsequent stint in Greece before joining the Clippers and later the Bucks on a two-year veteran minimum deal. The move clears space amid a crowded guard rotation, with Tyler Herro, Brayden Burries, and Kasparas Jakucionis already locked in alongside rising star Ryan Rollins, who emerged last season as a candidate for Most Improved Player honors.
Porter Jr.’s departure leaves him as a free agent, though his offensive contributions will likely earn him a spot on another team’s roster for the upcoming season.
Porter Jr.’s path to Milwaukee was far from straightforward. Originally acquired by the Pistons in 2019 as part of a multi-team trade involving Jon Leuer and future picks, he struggled early before flourishing in Houston.
A four-year, up-to-$82.5 million extension in 2022—though only guaranteed for $15.9 million—highlighted his value, even amid concerns about his off-court conduct. After a tumultuous period with the Rockets, including a felony assault charge in 2023 (later reduced to a misdemeanor), he was traded to Oklahoma City before signing with the Clippers.
His arrival in Milwaukee this offseason set up a competitive battle for minutes, though the Bucks’ depth ultimately made his role unsustainable this season. Despite the setback, Porter Jr.
remains a proven scorer and playmaker, and his next destination will likely prioritize maximizing his offensive impact.
