Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer clarified the structure of his defensive staff on Friday, confirming that senior defensive assistant Mike Pettine will report directly to him rather than defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Despite Parker’s description of Pettine as his ‘right-hand man,’ Schottenheimer emphasized that Pettine will serve as a key advisor, working closely with the entire coaching staff to refine the defense’s approach.
The first-time coordinator has already begun immersing himself in the team’s film room, analyzing early-game footage to identify areas for improvement, with Schottenheimer noting Pettine’s role will be more analytical than hands-on during practices. During games, Pettine will occupy the booth alongside Schottenheimer, while Parker remains on the field—a setup that contradicts Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ earlier suggestion that Parker would coach from the booth.
The Cowboys’ success—or lack thereof—will ultimately determine whether Pettine’s integration proves effective or prompts a full overhaul of the defensive strategy.
