Manchester City’s supporters turned Etihad Stadium into a sea of defiance and yellow on Saturday, marking their first Premier League home game since the club’s financial breach ruling. Tens of thousands of fans booed the league anthem and chanted slogans targeting both the Premier League and Ipswich Town’s visitors, while hundreds of inflatable bananas—reviving an ’80s fan tradition—were distributed across the stands.
The atmosphere reflected the club’s united front amid ongoing appeals over its financial violations, which included inflated sponsorship deals totaling £830 million between 2009 and 2018. City’s players, including Phil Foden, who scored his first goal of the season in a 19-minute opener, credited the fans’ energy for their momentum, as manager Enzo Maresca continued his unbeaten start with a seventh consecutive Premier League win.
The 60,817 attendance set a new record for the stadium, underscoring the club’s resilience during a turbulent period.
Maresca, who became the first manager in Premier League history to win his first seven games in charge, described the environment as electric, emphasizing the bond between players, staff, and supporters. Despite trailing Bournemouth earlier in the season and playing extended periods in some matches, City’s record remains untouched.
The defiant display extended beyond the pitch, with Foden playfully holding an inflatable banana during his post-match interview, symbolizing the club’s lighthearted yet determined response to its challenges.
