
Notre Dame’s offense exploded for 361 rushing yards in a dominant 58-7 victory over Stanford on Saturday, with freshman Jonaz Walton and sophomore Nolan James Jr. each contributing two touchdowns.
Walton shattered the freshman rushing record with 181 yards on 13 carries, surpassing a previous Notre Dame mark set against the Cardinal in 2015. The Irish struck early, with defensive end Boubacar Traore forcing a fumble on Stanford’s first drive and James Jr.
answering with a quick touchdown. Notre Dame’s first-half scoring spree included five straight drives, with Traore adding an interception to set up a field goal and seal a 37-0 halftime lead.
Three different running backs scored in the first half, including Walton’s 97-yard touchdown run and James Jr.’s 31-yard reception, while junior Aneyas Williams capped the scoring with a 70-yard catch-and-run. Stanford’s only points came in the second half, a five-play drive fueled by a defensive miscue and a recovered fumble by Traore, but Notre Dame’s rushing attack never relented, closing out the game with a 40-yard touchdown by Walton and a three-yard rush by freshman Javian Osborne.
Quarterback C.J. Carr completed 14 of 20 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense held Stanford to 202 total yards and just two third-down conversions in the first half.
