The Board of Control for Cricket in India has formally recognized Harmanpreet Kaur for her extensive tenure at the helm of the national women's team across all formats as she steps down from leadership. Her leadership career commenced unexpectedly during the 2012 Women's T20 Asia Cup final when injuries sidelined Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, prompting a young Kaur to guide the squad to an 18-run triumph against Pakistan and secure the inaugural trophy.
She subsequently assumed regular T20I leadership in 2016 before taking charge of ODIs and Tests in 2022 following Raj's retirement from international competition.
Throughout her time steering the squad, Kaur experienced numerous milestones, including reaching the 2020 T20 World Cup final, earning a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and capturing a gold medal at the Asian Games. Her individual achievements featured a memorable unbeaten 171-run knock against Australia during the 2017 Cricket World Cup semi-final, which propelled India into the title match and galvanized a new generation of players.
Most recently in 2025, she became the pioneering skipper to lift the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup for India after another crucial contribution in the semi-final against Australia.
