Australia’s Test squad for the series opener against South Africa has been reshaped by injury and last-minute setbacks, with Nic Maddinson earning a dramatic return to the red-ball format after a decade away. Maddinson, who last played for Australia in 2016 and has been sidelined by injuries and health challenges—including a cancer diagnosis—replaces the injured Cameron Green in the lineup.
His selection comes as Cooper Connolly, who had been in contention for the spot, was ruled out due to cold symptoms, leaving Maddinson as the surprise pick. Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, backed Maddinson’s readiness, citing his recent form and resilience despite his prolonged absence from first-class cricket for nearly 19 months.
The team will face a weakened South African bowling attack, with Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi both missing the match, while Australia’s pace trio of Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood remain intact. Cummins also emphasized the need to rotate squad members to manage workloads amid a grueling schedule, with Michael Neser and Scott Boland sitting out despite their experience.
The series kicks off at Kingsmead in Durban on October 9, with Australia opting to bat first after winning the toss.
