Auburn delivered a stunning upset over No. 1 Georgia on Saturday, ending the Bulldogs’ one-week reign at the top of the AP Top 25 and snapping their nine-game winning streak against the Tigers.
The game-winning moment came on a 34-yard field goal by kicker Alex McPherson as time expired in the second half, sealing a 27-24 victory. Auburn’s ground game dominated, with quarterback Byrum Brown rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries while the Tigers outrushed Georgia 192-113.
Georgia’s Gunner Stockton, despite leading a late touchdown drive, fumbled the ball with 58 seconds left, setting up Auburn’s game-winning kick after a roughing-the-passer penalty on Georgia’s Gabe Harris Jr. The loss also marked the second straight week a top-ranked team fell to an unranked opponent, following Texas’s defeat to Oklahoma the previous Saturday.
Georgia’s struggles included three personal foul penalties and two interceptions by Stockton, who doubled his season total with the turnovers. Auburn’s first-year coach, Alex Golesh, praised his team’s resilience, emphasizing their commitment to rebuilding the program one game at a time.
