Australian batsman Steve Smith is currently undergoing concussion assessments after being struck on the helmet by a short delivery from South African bowler Anrich Nortje during the second innings of the first Test in Durban. The incident occurred early in Smith’s batting stint, with the ball deflecting off his helmet toward fine leg, resulting in a leg bye for Australia.
Though initially cleared to continue, Smith did not return to the field later in the day, prompting further medical evaluation. His absence raises concerns given his history of head injuries, including a concussion during the 2019 Ashes series after being hit by Jofra Archer at Lord’s.
Under Cricket Australia’s concussion protocol, Smith would be ruled out of fielding for at least 24 hours if diagnosed, potentially impacting Australia’s final-day plans. The team is also managing other fitness issues, with Cameron Green missing the Test due to an abdominal strain and Josh Inglis recovering from a broken finger ahead of the second Test in Gqeberha.
Australia’s all-rounder Beau Webster expressed hope for Smith’s recovery, though his availability remains uncertain as the match enters its final stages.
