Angel Reese vs. Caitlin Clark: How Dream star reached first championship appearance before Fever sensation

Angel Reese has reached her first WNBA championship appearance as the Atlanta Dream enter the 2026 Finals, one step away from winning the league’s title. The Dream will face the Golden State Valkyries in Game 1 on Saturday, October 18, 2026, after eliminating the New York Liberty in three games.

Reese’s journey to this moment has been defined by physical dominance, defensive excellence, and a rapid ascent to becoming the league’s brightest star on the biggest stage.

Her arrival in Atlanta, secured through a trade involving first-round draft picks in 2027 and 2028, has transformed the Dream into contenders for their first championship since 2013.

Reese’s impact in the playoffs has been immediate, averaging 18.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.6 steals, and 2.2 blocks across the Dream’s first five postseason games. Her defensive prowess was recognized with the 2026 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year award, cementing her reputation as a two-way force.

The trade from the Chicago Sky marked a turning point. Reese’s dominance on the boards has made her a historic rebounder, further solidifying her status as the WNBA’s most complete player.

Reese’s offensive growth this season has been notable, particularly after trusting coach Karl Smesko to refine her shot. Her physicality has drawn sharp reactions, including a pre-Finals warning from Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who described Reese’s play as ‘dangerous.’

The rivalry between Reese and Caitlin Clark has been a defining storyline since both entered the WNBA. Reese’s trajectory has outpaced expectations, culminating in this Finals appearance.

Reese’s ability to control games on both ends of the floor has led the Dream to their first Finals since 2013, where they now face the Valkyries in a matchup that will determine the league’s champion. With Reese as the centerpiece, the Dream’s path to the Finals underscores how quickly her career has evolved—from a record-setting rookie to the league’s biggest star on the brightest stage.
