Former Alabama leader Nick Saban has faced sharp criticism from podcast host Ben Maller after endorsing the federal Protect College Sports Act. The legislation, which cleared the Senate by a 77-22 vote on Monday, aims to restrict athlete compensation while an attempted amendment to limit coaching salaries at $5 million per year ultimately failed.
Saban defended the disparity by claiming athletes and coaches operate in separate markets and suggested institutions manage coaching expenses through shortened agreements and reduced buyouts. Maller slammed the stance during his broadcast, arguing that the rules unfairly target student-athletes while shielding industry powerbrokers from financial accountability.
In addition to his legislative advocacy, Saban participated in a March 6 college sports roundtable at the White House hosted by President Donald Trump.
