The No. 1 Texas Longhorns suffered their first loss of the season in a thrilling Red River Rivalry showdown, falling 27–24 to Oklahoma in a game decided by a last-second field goal.
Oklahoma’s defense forced three turnovers, including two interceptions by safety Peyton Bowen, and kicker Tate Sandell sealed the win with a 47-yard field goal as time expired. Despite outgaining Oklahoma 382–238 in total yards, Texas struggled offensively, punting on its first four second-half possessions and failing to capitalize on key opportunities, including a missed 53-yard field goal attempt by Gianni Spetic with under two minutes left.
Quarterback Arch Manning, who threw all three Longhorn touchdown passes, was intercepted twice in the final minutes, with the second leading directly to Oklahoma’s game-winning drive. The loss also exposed vulnerabilities in Texas’ special teams, as Oklahoma scored its first touchdown on a blocked punt recovery by Dakoda Fields and capitalized on penalties that wiped out a Texas interception and set up a tying run by Lloyd Avant.
Texas fans took to social media to dissect the defeat, with many pointing to Manning’s performance and the offense’s inability to sustain drives as critical factors. While some acknowledged the Longhorns’ elite defense, others criticized the lack of offensive firepower and questioned coach Steve Sarkisian’s play-calling, particularly the heavy reliance on a run-heavy scheme despite Manning’s struggles.
The loss also dented Texas’ College Football Playoff prospects, dropping their projected playoff chances from 92.9% to 84.5% and reducing their odds of reaching the SEC title game to 21.3%, according to PFN’s projections. Despite the setback, some fans remained optimistic, emphasizing that the Longhorns still have opportunities to rebound in the coming weeks.
